Etretat

A special place where doors, needles and pinnacles characterise the cliffs.
Etretat also conceals other secrets...

Little fishing village inscribed in the dip of a valleuse :

Its origins as a fishing village are still evident in Etretat with original capstans and fishermen’s huts on the sea front , and fishermen’s cottages
set in squares named after fishing crews andmasters...

Its impressive villas sprang up in the 19th C, as Etretat became a fashionable seaside resort. Elegantly built, in very different styles, with stunning gardens.

Artists :

Etretat was a place of inspiration for all schools of painting, and its painters’ garden on the promenade was an essential meeting point for itinerant
impressionists. One of Gide’s favouriteimpressionists. One of Gide’s favourite
places was the protestant temple, with its small, simple cemetery, built in 1883 at the Château de Cuverville. As tourism flourishes, hotels appear
and Anglo-Norman architecture develops in its fashionable timbered style. Start off at the covered market by the beach, pass in front of the
salamander mansion where the timbers come from two 14th/16th C houses in Lisieux which were carefully rebuilt in Etretat.
