Valmont

Le château
In the 11th century, the Lords of Estouteville built a fortress and an abbey 500 metres apart. These buildings underwent alterations and improvements over the centuries, giving the village a very special atmosphere. Visitors can still see the 12th-century and Renaissance wings of the castle.
The square keep is one of the best-preserved keeps in France. The park, which is now privately-owned,is open to the public in July and August.

sNotre-Dame du Pré de Valmont
The abbey founded in 1169 by Nicolas d’Estouteville, grandson of one of William the Conqueror’s companions-in-arms, was home to a community of Benedictines sent here from Hambye Abbey in Manche. Eugène Delacroix produced
some delightful water colours here. In 1994, it was purchased by the Benedictine Sisters of Lisieux who undertook some major renovation work. This is one of three Benedictine abbeys in Seine-Maritime.

A découvrir...

The surrounding area has all the charms of a rural and maritime district with small towns nestling in the countryside, 10 dovecotes, 16 manor houses, 13
privately-owned châteaux etc. The natural light in this area has changed little since Eugène Boudin created his paintings. Crowds of people come to
find out about local produce during the Livestock Fair in September in Valmont and the Apple and Cider Festival that runs from the last Sunday in October to 1st November.

"Le Vivier promenade"
This is a beautiful walk in the shade of trees that are hundreds of years old, leading to the source of the River Valmont. Le Vivier was a favourite walk for
author Guy de Maupassant, scientist Georges Cuvier and artist Eugène Delacroix and every year the promenade, like the picturesque narrow streets in the town, are immortalised during the “Artists in the Street” Festival on the 3rd Sunday in June.
